March Patient of the Month: Paul Adkins

In 2001, after years of struggling for every breath, Paul received a lifesaving lung transplant. His doctor compared the transplant to a marriage, saying "when you find the perfect mate, it's for life." Paul's new lung has survived a heart attack, quadruple bypass, back surgery and pneumonia.

But now Paul's health is failing, and he was recently diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, an illness that causes scar tissue to build up in the kidneys. His immune system is heavily suppressed from his essential anti-rejection medications, eliminating dialysis as a treatment option. Doctors say a kidney transplant is critical for his survival.

Paul considers himself blessed to have two perfect marriages: Shirley, his wife of 45 years, and his lung transplant. His children and grandchildren want nothing more than to see him healthy again. The shortage of organ donors has created difficult odds for Paul to find a match, but his granddaughter, Sarah, is being evaluated to donate one of her kidneys for a paired kidney exchange program. She's not a compatible match for Paul, but she'll donate her kidney to another patient in exchange for someone else donating to save her grandfather's life. His family hopes this will give Paul a better chance of finding a donor match soon.

June Patient of the Month: Mandi Batson

Mandi Batson has been fighting for her life since she was 4 years old. She has endured two heart surgeries and was diagnosed with Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML) in 2006. The following year, she received a bone marrow transplant to treat the CML but later contracted Graft vs. Host Disease (GVHD) as a result of the transplant. Bone marrow patients can contract GVHD when the newly transplanted cells attack the recipient's organs. In Mandi's case, the disease attacked and damaged her lungs. Doctors have said a double-lung transplant is critical to her survival.

Throughout every health battle she has faced, Mandi has been a fighter. She is thankful for the dedication of her family, who has been with her every step of the way, and the steadfast support of her church family at Faith Assembly of God. Despite her health challenges, she graduated from high school in the top 10% of her class, is an active member of her church youth group and serves as an ambassador for the Make-A-Wish program. Currently, Mandi is a pre-med college student and hopes to be a doctor to help children overcome their own cancer battles. But she needs your help.

NFT May Patient of the Month: Scott Machowski

Scott is suffering from Cystic Fibrosis (CF), a disease that has affected him his entire life. Although his cousin was born and diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when Scott was 5 years old, doctors did not think it was necessary to test Scott for the disease.

When Scott was 15, both he and his mom came down with the flu, but his mom quickly realized Scott's illness was much worse.

Within three weeks, he lost 20 pounds, and doctors finally tested him for the disease. Scott and his family soon learned the devastating news that he was in fact suffering from CF. Because this condition is typically diagnosed within the first three years of life, Scott's case had significantly worsened over the years. Scott has been told a lung transplant is critical to his survival. Without a transplant, doctors don't expect him to live more than two more years, and he is only 34 years old.

April Patient of the Month: Terri deBruin

In 2004, Terri first noticed troubling symptoms, such as redness and swelling in her hands. After a local rheumatologist reviewed her records, symptoms and blood tests, she immediately knew something was wrong. Terri soon learned she was suffering from systemic scleroderma, an autoimmune disease causing her immune system to attack her body, especially her lungs. Doctors have told Terri a lung transplant is essential to her survival.

A devoted wife and mother of two, Terri is determined to overcome this disease so she can spend many more years with her family and see her children get married and have children of their own. Terri loves to scrapbook and do other crafts and is thankful she can still enjoy these activities. She looks forward to being well enough travel to museums and zoos and stay outdoors in the heat, which she loves.

A lung transplant costs approximately $450,000. And that's only the beginning. Even with health insurane, Terri faces significant medical expenses. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications. The cost of post-transplant medications can range from $2,000 to $5,000 per month--and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

Cleveland Clinic Sets Lung Transplant Record

Last week, the Cleveland Clinic set the world record for the number of lung transplants performed in a single year with their 129th lung transplant. The previous record was set in 2007 when the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center performed 128 lung transplants. Cleveland Clinic expects to perform at least a total of 160 lung transplants by the end of the year.

"It's not about the numbers," Dr. Marie Budev, medical director of the Clinic's Lung Transplantation Program, said by phone Thursday afternoon. "It's about the patients. And we're learning more and more about what you can do for these patients. We're learning that these patients that were deemed high risk can actually do very well."
